Chawan means rice bowl in Japanese, and Chawanzaka is named after Kiyomizu pottery, a style of pottery originating from this area. Not only pottery, but this area is also the birthplace of the most famous confectionery in Kyoto, Yatsuhashi, as well as many other traditional Kyoto crafts. Kiyomizu temple is a 10 min walking distance away, and Sannenzaka, Kenninji temple, Yasui Konpiragu, Yasaka shrine, Hanamikoji, and Gion area are all within 15 min walking distance.
